Will Deutsche Post's street scooter make a big splash?

According to new findings, a comeback of the yellow electric vans that are actually decommissioned does not seem to be ruled out.

According to the "Manager Magazin", four investors from Germany and abroad should be interested in buying the Aachen subsidiary.

Participating in the bidding war are the Düsseldorf entrepreneur and e.GO investor Nazif Destani, an unnamed American investor group and two Chinese companies from the automotive industry, specifically the supplier Neapco and the vehicle manufacturer Chery.

So far nothing is known about possible purchase amounts.

According to "Manager Magazin", however, the interest is due to the ongoing boom in electromobility.

The move away from the internal combustion engine is politically wanted in many countries, the purchase of vehicles with plugs is sometimes promoted with high subsidies.

In addition, the prices of listed companies in the electrical industry have exploded in recent months.

Streetscooter is worth “billions” according to the Post boss

Deutsche Post could now benefit financially from this.

The Streetscooter company emerged from the environment of the Technical University in Aachen and had established itself as a specialist for simple, inexpensive e-transporters for courier services since it was taken over by the Post in 2014.

However, due to losses of an estimated 70 million euros annually, Post boss Frank Appel renounced the eco-truck a year ago.

Production should be completely stopped by the end of 2020.

So far, this has continued to run at the Düren plant - but only in small numbers and at most for a limited period until the end of the year.

Then around 20,000 e-parcel vehicles will complete the Deutsche Post fleet.

How things will go on for the streetscooter afterwards will be decided by the bidding competition among investors.

According to "Manager Magazin", the car manufacturer Chery is said to want to relocate production to China in order to cut costs.

The three other bidders are therefore considering “further developments, but above all a refinement on the capital market”.

For Appel, the former takeover of the street scooter could still be financially worthwhile.

"Individual analysts have calculated that the streetscooter is worth billions," he said in 2018.
