WTO: Global trade in goods continues to rebound in the fourth quarter of 2020

Xinhua News Agency, Geneva, February 18 (Reporter Ling Xin) The World Trade Organization released a report on the 18th that global trade in goods continued to rebound in the fourth quarter of 2020, but the rebound trend may not be maintained in the first quarter of 2021.

The latest issue of the "Barometer of Trade in Goods" report released by the WTO on the same day showed that the global trade in goods prosperity index reflecting the market in the fourth quarter of last year reached 103.9, higher than the 100.7 in the third quarter of last year.

The WTO stated that after the sharp decline in trade in goods in the first half of 2020, since the third quarter, driven by the increase in exports from Asia and the increase in imports from North America and Europe, the volume of global trade in goods has rebounded from a low point.

In October last year, the WTO predicted that global trade in goods will shrink by 9.2% in 2020 and grow by 7.2% in 2021, but the scale of trade will still be much lower than before the epidemic.

According to the compilation rules of the Global Goods Trade Prosperity Index, the value 100 is the base point.

If the index reading in a certain quarter is 100, it means that the growth of global trade in goods is in line with the medium-term trend expectations.

An index greater than 100 indicates that the growth of global trade in goods in the quarter was higher than expected, and vice versa, it indicates that the growth of global trade in goods was lower than expected.

The World Trade Organization first released the Global Trade Prosperity Index in July 2016. By collecting trade statistics of major economies, it provides early signals on the current short-term development of world trade and provides more timely international trade for trade policy makers and the business community. information.
