The

Government

has taken forward this Thursday in Congress the new maternity supplement in pensions.

The discrepancies with its partners have been about to overturn the validation of the royal decree, which has finally come out thanks to the votes of the Junts.

The measure has been criticized by outraged large families who consider that it cuts the benefit of mothers with more children and who have contributed for longer.

Keys to the new benefit

What does it consist of?

This is aid aimed at correcting the gender gap in pensions, which is currently around 30%, although it can also be requested by parents.

Escrivá believes that 98% will be granted to mothers.

According to the data provided by the minister, the gap originates after the maternity of the first birth and is consolidated afterwards;

hence they now want to cover those who only have one child.

Who can apply for the aid?

According to article 60 of the LGSS, modified by this Royal Decree, "women who have had one or more sons or daughters and who are beneficiaries of a contributory retirement, permanent disability or widowhood pension" will have the right to a supplement for each son or daughter due to the incidence of the gender gap.

In the case of men, they must meet any of the following requirements: cause a widow's pension due to the death of the other parent or cause a contributory pension and have their professional career interrupted or affected on the occasion of birth or adoption.

What happens if both request it?

Only one person can receive it, so whoever accumulates the worst pension will have preference.

According to Escrivá, in practice, in 98% of the cases this means that women will receive it.

In the case of a same-sex couple, the person with a lower pension will receive it.

Why is it said to affect large families?

It affects families with more than four children, since the aid grants a fixed amount for each of them, but there is a maximum that would correspond to the fourth.

That is, from the fifth the complement would not increase.

According to data from the Spanish Federation of Large Families (FEFN), in Spain there are more than 21,000 families with five or more children: 15,500 have this figure, 3,700 have 6, 1,100 have seven, more than 500 reach eight and 350 have at least nine.

And the highest incomes?

In the previous model, the supplement did not exist with one child, it was 5% of the pension in the case of having two children, 10% with three and 15% with four or more.

By going from a percentage of the pension to a fixed amount, those who have contributed more can go on to receive less.

In any case, it will only occur in the new aid, since the text states that those who were receiving the previous aid (the maternity supplement for demographic contribution), will keep it, although it will be incompatible with the new one (contributory pension supplement for the reduction of the gender gap).
