The publication, referring to a German official, reports that the negotiations, in particular, are being discussed "the threat of sanctions against companies that are involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2."

As the newspaper notes, the US administration is reviewing its policy towards the project.

On the eve of the publication Handelsblatt wrote that Germany and the United States have not yet begun direct negotiations on the project, noting that they will begin when important posts in the US ministries are approved.

In early February, the media also reported that the United States had expressed its readiness to start a dialogue on the gas pipeline project.
