From the point of view of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the fight against climate change needs a strong innovation and investment boost.

A five-fold increase in global government research spending on clean energies and other climate innovations is necessary within the next decade, Gates told the Düsseldorf “Handelsblatt” (Monday edition).

He urged Germany's auto industry to accelerate the development of e-cars.

With the subsidy for the solar panel, Germany “did the world a great favor,” said Gates.

However, due to their unreliability in generating electricity, solar and wind energy were nowhere near enough.

The nuclear power rejected by environmentalists is therefore essential, Gates concluded.

Gates der Welt attested a lack of innovation in the field of electromobility.

With the exception of countries like Norway, the spread of e-cars is only advancing slowly.

The Microsoft founder also issued a warning to German car manufacturers.

Germany has "probably done more than any other country for the automotive industry," stressed Gates.

But: "If Germany cannot establish itself in the field of electric cars, it would be a huge tragedy."

The Microsoft founder announced that he would intervene in the fight against climate change himself and would invest two billion dollars in start-ups and other projects over the next five years.

Gates spoke on the occasion of his new book "How we prevent the climate catastrophe".

In it he calls for the reduction of CO2 emissions to zero by 2050 in order to avoid huge environmental and economic damage.

Among other things, CO2 taxes, certificate trading and the promotion of alternative energies are necessary.
