“The EU opposes third-country sanctions against European companies exercising legal duration,” he told Interfax.

Answering the question whether the EU can interfere with the implementation of the project, Borrell stressed that Nord Stream 2 is “not a common European project”.

“The decision to build this pipeline should be made by the EU member states participating in this project.

The European Commission insists that the pipeline complies with the applicable EU legislation, ”he added.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Nord Stream 2 will function as the Russian side plans to sell gas on the basis of commercial contracts.

As noted in the State Department, the United States will continue to monitor the situation with the completion of the gas pipeline and, if necessary, will consider the issue of imposing sanctions.
