  • Fevad publishes this Thursday the report of e-commerce in 2020.

  • The two confinements obviously pushed the French to make purchases online.

  • And the average basket for an Internet transaction was 61 euros.

Confined or under curfew, with businesses closed, the French naturally turned to the Internet for their purchases in 2020. According to figures published this Thursday by the Federation e-commerce and distance selling (Fevad), which brings together 600 companies and 800 sites, online sales of products and services reached 112 billion euros last year, up 8.5% year on year.

This global figure hides a huge difference between the sectors.

Indeed, services (sales of travel and leisure) have experienced a sudden drop in their activity due to the various restrictions: travel prohibited, borders closed, tourist sites closed… In total, online sales in this area are declining by 10% in 2020.

Online sales up 23% at Christmas

This is obviously not the case for the sale of goods (food, clothing, games, etc.).

"Online sales of store banners confirm their progress: + 53% over the year with peaks at + 100% during the two confinements (acceleration of home deliveries," click & collect "and drive)", notes the Fevad.

As for small businesses (TPE / PME), “the rise in e-commerce (…) [has] been able to provide an outlet (…) and limit the decline in their sales”.

According to Fevad, the peak of online activity was particularly high during the Christmas period (November-December).

"The closure of stores and that of so-called non-essential departments led to a sharp increase in sales in November which continued in December, despite the reopening of physical stores", with a 23% increase in sales. internet sales compared to 2019. An increase which resulted in the swelling of the volume of parcels delivered during this holiday season.

Finally, with a boosted e-commerce, the average basket per purchase has also increased: “the health crisis has changed the evolution of the average amount of a transaction, which had been declining for several years.

The average basket amounts to 61 euros in 2020 (vs. 59 euros in 2019), ”notes Fevad.
