  The "Report" shows that nearly one billion Internet users in my country constitute the world's largest digital society.

As of December 2020, the overall scale of netizens in my country has accounted for about one-fifth of the global netizens.

During the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, the scale of my country's Internet users increased from 688 million to 989 million, an increase of 43.7% in five years.

Among them, the number of mobile Internet users in my country is 986 million, which is 88.85 million new mobile Internet users compared to March 2020, and 99.7% of Internet users use mobile phones to access the Internet.

  CNNIC Director Zeng Yu pointed out that as of December 2020, my country's Internet penetration rate has reached 70.4%, which is higher than the global average.

The main body of the growth of Internet users in my country has become increasingly obvious from youth groups to underage and elderly groups.

As of December 2020, my country has nearly 260 million “silver Internet users” (over 50 years old) and 160 million Internet users under 20 years old.

Among the new netizens, netizens under the age of 20 accounted for 17.1% higher than the proportion of this group in the total netizens; netizens over 60 accounted for 11.0% higher than the proportion of this group in the total netizens.

Reduced to within 30% for the first time since 2017

  According to the "Report", as of December 2020, the number of rural Internet users in my country was 309 million, accounting for 31.3% of the total Internet users, an increase of 54.71 million compared with March 2020; the number of urban Internet users was 680 million, accounting for 68.7% of the total Internet users, compared with An increase of 30.69 million in March 2020.

  According to the "Report", as of December 2020, the Internet penetration rate in my country's urban areas was 79.8%, an increase of 3.3 percentage points from March 2020; the Internet penetration rate in rural areas was 55.9%, an increase of 9.7 percentage points from March 2020.

The difference in Internet penetration rates between urban and rural areas has shrunk by 6.4 percentage points compared with March 2020.

  Zeng Yu said that the difference in Internet penetration in my country's urban and rural areas is 23.9%, and it has shrunk to within 30% for the first time since 2017.

  Zeng Yu also pointed out that, on the other hand, it shows the characteristics of migration from "east to west", with the rapid growth of Internet users in the Midwest.

As of December 2020, the number of Internet users in the central and western regions has increased by 40% compared with 2016, and the growth rate is 12.4 percentage points higher than that in the eastern region.

More than half of non-netizens “do not know the computer/the Internet does not go online”

Elderly people aged 60 and above are the main group of non-netizens

  According to the "Report", as of December 2020, the number of non-netizens in my country was 416 million, a decrease of 80.73 million from March 2020.

From a regional perspective, my country’s non-netizens are still dominated by rural areas. The proportion of non-netizens in rural areas is 62.7%, which is 23.3 percentage points higher than the proportion of the national rural population.

In terms of age, the elderly group of 60 years and above is the main group of non-netizens.

As of December 2020, my country's non-netizens aged 60 and above accounted for 46.0% of the total non-netizens.

  The "Report" mentioned that non-netizens cannot access the Internet, encounter inconveniences in daily life such as travel, consumption, medical treatment, and work, and cannot fully enjoy the convenience brought by intelligent services.

Statistics show that among the various life inconveniences caused by non-netizens not being online, the inability to enter and exit some public places without a "health code" ranks first, accounting for 27.2% of non-netizens, followed by the inability to pay in cash, accounting for 25.8% of non-netizens. %.

Unable to buy tickets or register accounts accounted for 24.9% of non-netizens. The reduction of offline service outlets caused difficulties in handling affairs and the inability to obtain information in time were 24.6% and 22.9%, respectively.

  According to the analysis of the "Report", lack of skills, limited education, age factors and insufficient equipment are the main reasons why non-netizens do not go online.

The proportion of non-netizens who do not go online because they do not understand the computer/network is 51.5%; the proportion of non-netizens who do not go online because they do not understand pinyin and other cultural restrictions is 21.9%; the proportion of non-netizens who do not go online because they are too old/too young The proportion of netizens is 15.1%; the proportion of non-netizens who do not go online because they do not have Internet devices such as computers is 13.3%; the proportion of non-netizens who do not go online because they do not have time to go online or are not interested are all less than 10%.
