  • The winner of the Vendée Globe, known in a few hours, will receive a trophy made in a foundry in eastern Sarthe.

  • This family company works a lot for sports clients (PSG, FFF, FFR etc.) but not only.

  • The company was forced to diversify to cope with a drop in activity on trophies in particular.

In a few hours, the winner of the Vendée Globe will be lifting the trophy for the prestigious sailing race around the world.

An object made in Sarthe, at the Macheret art foundry, located in Montfort-le-Gesnois.

Paul (48 years old) and Yves (40 years old) took over in 2012 from the company, created in 1982 by their father Philippe.

In fact, it was the latter who in 2004 won a call for tenders for the Vendée Globe trophy.

“My father being a fan of boats, he had proposed a creation with the codes of sailing,” says Paul, who is responsible, among other things, for marketing within the family company.

She hit the mark and it's still the same trophy since.

This award, published by the workshops of Prisme, a Nantes company, measures 70 cm high and is in solid bronze with a silver plating.

Since its creation, the Sarthe company has been working with bronze on markets for trophies, medals and decorative ornament.

It manufactures between 2,000 and 3,000 trophies per year.

Many of his clients come from the world of sport.

The French Football Federation, the French Rugby Federation, the International Volleyball League and PSG (among others) are collaborating with the Macheret foundry.

"We achieved medals for the departures of Pastore and Cavani, for example," recalls Paul.

A healthy diversification in the lighting sector

Next Sunday, the trophy awarded to the winner of the Prix d'Amérique is stamped Macheret, for example.

“We create, we offer designs and models to our customers.

But we have carte blanche for our creations.

As was the case in collaborations (other than sport) with the Principality of Monaco or for the NRJ Music Awards.

"We are one of the rare foundries to do everything from A to Z, that is to say to design, manufacture and market high-end trophies in France", observes Paul.

Since 2012, the foundry's turnover, which stands at 2 million euros to date, has tripled and the number of employees has increased from 10 to 19. However, in 2017, the two brothers decided to diversify by launching a range of bronze and alabaster lighting.

The manufacture of thousands of trophies and awards for sports federations or for ceremonies of all kinds now represents only 35% of turnover.

The cancellation of many events in 2020 necessarily had an impact on the economic activity of the Foundry.

“We compensated for this loss by this diversification in the lighting sector, explains Paul.

We are explorers, that's how we were educated by our father.

This self-taught idea suits us well.
