Introduced at the beginning of 2020, the European CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulation sets a CO2 emission quota for car manufacturers.

Normally limited to 95g / km, this quota displays a small flexibility according to the weight of the models marketed by the manufacturers.

In this exercise, the French groups PSA and Renault are doing well, while Volkswagen has failed despite great efforts.

With a result of 99.8g / km, the German manufacturer sought to reduce this figure by joining forces with SAIC, Chinese owner of the MG brand, thus creating a “CO2 Pool”, a practice tolerated by these regulations.

VW's score suddenly rose to 99.3g / km, which is still 0.5g above the target.

The German group could therefore be fined equal to the number of vehicles sold, multiplied by € 95.

According to some sources, the sum to be paid would be more than ... 100 million euros!

For 2021, the manufacturer wants to be more serene, thanks to the arrival on the market of several fully electric and plug-in hybrid models.
