It is not entirely clear who first found fun using a curved stick to sink a small ball into a hole in the ground.

Some attribute the invention of the golf to the ancient Romans, others to the Chinese of the Ming Dynasty.

However, historians agree that Scotland is the birthplace of modern golf.

Although there is evidence that golf has been played in the Highlands since 1457, the town of Prestwick near the city of Glasgow is considered the real cradle of the sport.

The world's first open golf championships were held here in 1860.

Since then, tens of thousands of ball hitting fans have come to the Scottish coast every year.

Players who are particularly in need of recognition and those who can afford it have their own golf course at the historic site.

US ex-President Donald Trump owns two.

It remains to be seen whether the heavily indebted real estate tycoon will be able to afford the property for a long time.

As well as whether he will still feel like getting on the plane to visit his luxurious Trump-Turnberry golf course.

Because not a few Scots have made it their business to spoil Trump's journey.

At the beginning of the week, the Scottish brewery chain Brewdog launched a petition on the Change.org portal to rename Glasgow Prestwick Airport to "Joe Biden International".

The number of signatories quickly approached the 10,000 mark on Friday.

"Trump's arrival in Scotland is expected at the end of this week, he always flies via Glasgow Prestwick Airport," it says laconically in the grounds of the petition by Brewdog co-founder James Watt: "We believe the airport should be renamed Joe Biden International."

During the election campaign, Trump had always made contempt for the Democratic rival candidate ("Sleepy Joe") and accused him of election fraud after his victory.

It would actually be unlikely that he would instruct the pilots of his private jets to land on Joe Biden International in the future.

But the fact that Trump is said to have planned to travel to Scotland to play golf immediately after leaving the White House is hardly credible because of the bad weather there.

In fact, he is now drawn to his home in Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

The Scottish brewer's petition alone is unlikely to have triggered his change of heart, if it was one.

However, shortly before that, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon had practically declared the ex-president to be persona non grata.

At the first corona hearing this year in the capital Edinburgh, Sturgeon had made it clear that due to the pandemic requirements, it was illegal to enter Scotland without a valid reason.

"Coming here to play golf isn't what I would call a valid reason," Sturgeon said when asked.

That applies to Trump "like everyone else."

The Greens had previously called in the Scottish Parliament to investigate the financial situation of the Trump holdings in Scotland.

In addition to the Turnberry Golf Resort in the county of Ayrshire, this also includes the Trump International Golf Link in Menie, Aberdeenshire, an 18-hole course with an attached 5-star hotel.

The petition to change the name of Glasgow Airport is unlikely to be successful.

The result of the survey on the open Internet platform does not develop any binding, at best puts politicians, if not under pressure to act, then at least under pressure to explain.

The fact that the newly elected US President Joseph Robinette Biden has no family ties to Scotland speaks against the renaming.

Joseph Biden's ancestors came from Sussex, England on his father's side and from Ireland on his mother's side.

In contrast, Trump's ties to Scotland are also personal.

His mother, Mary Anne McLeod, was born in the village of Tong on Lewis, a Scottish island in the Outer Hebrides.
