The Dia supermarket chain, present in Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Brazil,

managed to close 2020 with the first improvement in sales in years.

Specifically, it increased sales by 0.2%, to 6,882 million.

The company will present its accounts on February 26, but advanced the data this Thursday to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).

Like-for-like sales, (excluding store closings or new openings), increased 7%.

Dia has been

in the process of transforming its network of establishments

throughout 2020

.

Now it has 6,169, almost 7% less than a year ago.

In the fourth quarter, it had a turnover of 1,688 million, which is 5.6% less compared to the same period of 2019, but it did increase comparable sales by 6.9%.

In the first part of the year, sales performed better, so this drop is attributable to their collapse in Brazil and Argentina, markets where Dia is also present.

These 2020 results are the first annual sales progress after the serious crisis that the chain experienced, which ended with the launch of a takeover bid by the largest shareholder, the change of direction and the implementation of a transformation plan to recover sales, which were collapsed.

Spain

In Spain "it has maintained its positive sales trajectory", although it has 8% fewer establishments in the year.

Specifically, the company achieved sales of 1,143.2 million in the fourth quarter, an increase of 9%.

In the year 2020 as a whole, net sales reached 4,508 million in our country, with a growth of 8%.

"The positive behavior of comparable sales during the fourth quarter in Grupo Dia, continuing the trend already observed throughout 2020, was due to the impact of continuous operational improvements, as well as an improved fresh supply that we are offering to our customers when they need us most, "said Dia CEO Stephan DuCharme.

Dia highlights the increase of more than 23% in the size of the average basket, which compensates for the 13% drop in the number of tickets.

That is, we are going to buy fewer times, but when we go to the supermarket, we fill the basket more.
