As the demand for souvenirs is expected to decrease due to the expansion of the area covered by the state of emergency, the confectionery maker that handles "eel pie" in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, has decided to significantly reduce production for the time being.

"Unagi pie" produced by the confectionery maker "Shunkado" in Hamamatsu City is a popular souvenir sold not only in Shizuoka prefecture but also in Aichi prefecture.

However, as the expansion of the state of emergency to Aichi Prefecture is expected to reduce demand, the manufacturer has decided to significantly reduce production at its factory in Nishi-ku, Hamamatsu City for the time being.

Specifically, compared to adults who were not affected by the new coronavirus, the factory utilization rate will be reduced to about 40%, and the factory will be shut down three to four days a week.

This means that the monthly production will be reduced to about half that of an adult.

On the other hand, the salary to employees working at the factory will not be reduced during this period.

Chie Teshima, chief of the Shunkado Business Administration Office, said, "I made the decision not to have excess inventory. I hope that the infection will subside quickly and everyone will enjoy the taste of eel pie."
