VW Caddy -

DR

VW has gone to great lengths to put its model in the spotlight… and it shows.

It is indeed impossible to confuse this Caddy with another model in the segment as it displays its own personality.

This same modernity is found when the door is opened, where the dashboard is modeled on that of the last Golf.

It is characterized by its large central screen of 6.5, 8.25 or even 10 '' (depending on the version), by which a multimedia system is controlled which can be particularly rich.

In front of him, the driver can opt for a Digital Cockpit with a 10.25 '' screen which allows the display of driving information, multimedia or navigation to be personalized.

And the equipment follows the same trend with everything necessary in terms of safety (emergency braking assistance, monitoring of blind spots…) and above all a Trailer Assist, which stabilizes the trailer and greatly facilitates maneuvering.

VW has obviously paid particular attention to practical aspects: the Caddy can be fitted with 2 sliding side doors (optional electric), making it possible to load a Europallet in the case of the Van version.

Two wheelbase lengths are still available, in many body variants: ludospace, combi, double cabin, mobile home (with integrated kitchenette) and, of course, van.

New Horizons

Chassis side, the Caddy remains strangely faithful to its rigid rear axle, while it is based on the new MQB platform (that of the Golf) from the VW group.

However, the damping is now entrusted to coil springs, much less hopping empty than in the past.

Comfort remains however very "Germanic", much firmer than the competition.

This has the advantage of contributing to the feeling of driving precision, and of limiting body roll.

But it will be necessary to go slowly on rough roads to preserve the lower back and the load.

This does not prevent the Caddy from showing real road enjoyment, in particular by its driving position very close to that of a traditional car, but also by the respondent of the diesel engine tested, the 2.0l TDI of 102 hp , mated to a six-speed manual transmission (a DSG automatic is also available as an option).

It would be better, however, not to follow the recommendations of the gear change indicator too much, at the risk of running almost systematically under-revving.

This combination is currently the happy medium of the range, between the 75 and 122 hp versions of the same engine.

In a few weeks, the petrol engines (1.5l TSI 114 ch) will arrive, as well as the 4Motion four-wheel drive variants.

They will be followed by hybrid and natural gas engines in 2022.
