Consumers confirmed that the prices of masks in Abu Dhabi markets decreased, reaching their lowest levels during the new Corona virus (Covid 19) pandemic, and the period prior to it, at a time when sales outlets offered temporary discounts that exceeded 50% on types of these masks.

In turn, outlets attributed the decline in the price of masks to the entry of new local companies into the field of production, as well as the diversification of imports from abroad, which contributed to the abundance of supply and the variety of options for consumers.

They confirmed that the Abu Dhabi government provided facilities for national small and medium-sized companies to work in the production of masks, while setting high-quality standard specifications, which would support local production and the ability of local companies to compete in the markets.

In detail, consumer Salem Masoud said that the prices of masks decreased to unprecedented levels during and before the period of the emerging corona virus pandemic.

He explained that during the last period he had bought locally made brands of single-use masks, at a price ranging between 7.50 and 8.50 dirhams for a package that contains 50 masks, indicating that this is the original price of the package, and not within a fixed-time offer.

He continued: “This is the first time that masks are offered at these prices, as it was difficult to buy them at a price less than 28 dirhams, meaning that the prices decreased by up to 73%,” pointing out that the price reached 50 dirhams several months ago, except within Offers temporary discounts.

He added: "Before the outbreak of the pandemic, the price of a package (50 masks) was 25 dirhams, meaning that the price decreased by between 66 and 70%, compared to that period."

Emirati quality

Consumer Sheikh Ali agreed that the prices of masks have decreased in an unprecedented way since the start of the pandemic, and even before it.

She explained that she bought a pack of Emirati-made masks containing 50 pieces at a price of 12.50 dirhams, and another for 14 dirhams, both of which are of high quality.

She pointed out that it has been very difficult to find a package of masks at a price less than 28 dirhams, or 37 dirhams, since the start of the pandemic, noting that there are currently several options for choosing the type and color.

And she mentioned that she noticed that outlets offered price offers for masks, according to which a new type for single use would decrease from 23.50 to 19 dirhams, a decline of 19%.

In the same context, consumer Reda Mahmoud confirmed that there are several options for masks in the market now, pointing out that most of them are sold at very reasonable prices, ranging between 7.5 and 18 dirhams, in addition to the fact that most of them are locally made.

He pointed out that there were higher-priced masks, at a time when some outlets offered price offers to some of them, as he bought a package containing 50 masks for 9.90 dirhams, compared to 24 dirhams previously, a decrease of 58%, and he also bought a package of another quality at 5.90 dirhams against Dhs12, previously, down 50.8%.

As for consumer Fadi Sila, he said that the offers included “N95” masks, the price of one type of which decreased from 99 dirhams to 59 dirhams per piece, and another company offered an offer (buy one and the second for free) for 89 dirhams, meaning that the price of one mask decreased by 50 %, To reach 44.5 dirhams.

New companies

In addition, an official at a major outlet in Abu Dhabi, Nader Saadoun, said that the entry of new local companies in the field of masks production, in addition to the companies that entered the market some time ago, and the diversification of import markets from abroad, led to an abundance of supply and competition in attracting consumers. Thus, lowering the original prices of masks, and introducing very competitive prices.

In turn, the sales official at another outlet, Idris Ibrahim, agreed that there is an abundance of supply, and many options are currently available to consumers, given that local companies have entered the field of producing masks, as well as local companies that started working in this field immediately after the pandemic, and the diversification of import Which led to lower prices, and attractive price offers.

Retail affairs expert, Davy Nagpal confirmed, that there is an abundance of production, whether imported or local, after new companies entered the market, and local factories converted their production to masks, to cover the needs of the local market, pointing also to the entry of merchants to import masks, due to the high demand, And expectations of continued demand for this product in the future.

Nagpal called for tightening control over the markets, to ensure that quality standards are followed in production, and that there are no sudden global or local fluctuations that lead to monopoly or unjustified price increases.
