The consequences of the corona pandemic are clearly visible on the labor market: Last year, the average number of unemployed increased by 429,000 compared to 2019 to just under 2.7 million, as the Federal Employment Agency (BA) announced in Nuremberg on Tuesday.

The unemployment rate rose by an average of 0.9 percentage points to 5.9 percent.

In addition, never before have so many people been on short-time work at the same time.

The peak was reached in April with almost six million people - that was 18 percent of all employees subject to social security contributions.

During the financial and economic crisis, the peak was 1.4 million people.

In December the number of unemployed in Germany was just over 2.7 million.

That was an increase of 480,000 compared to the previous year.
