When it comes to a new notebook, almost every second customer in Germany opts for a 15-inch model.

Exactly such a device is available for sale with the Medion Akoya E15408 from January 4th at Aldi Nord and from January 8th at Aldi Süd.

The price tag is a moderate 499 euros.

Is the Aldi notebook a really good offer?

"Computer Bild" had the Medion Akoya E15408 in the configuration variant MD 63690 in the test.

Medion Akoya E15408: aluminum-plastic mix

With a weight of exactly 1764 grams, the Medion Akoya E15408 is really light for a 15-inch notebook.

The packaging contributes to the low weight: Medion made the housing from a mix of materials.

The display lid is made of fine aluminum, while the floor assembly with keyboard and technology and the display edge are made of lightweight plastic.

Speaking of the display bezel.

It's nice and narrow on the left and right - also at the top, but just thick enough that Medion was able to accommodate the webcam required for video calls.

In some models of the past, the camera sat at the lower edge of the picture and involuntarily produced comical recordings of one's own likeness from this perspective.

The Aldi notebook shows websites, documents, photos and videos in full HD with 1920x1080 pixels on the 15.6-inch display (almost 40 centimeters screen diagonal).

Contrast and brightness can be set quite high if necessary, the overall reproduction looks okay - even if the Aldi notebook is not so accurate in terms of color reproduction and the Medion's display is very reflective.

But this makes the reproduction look more brilliant than with matte displays.

Also good: In contrast to smaller notebooks, the 15-inch format allows the installation of a keyboard with a separate number pad - ideal for Excel workers.

And the keyboard can be illuminated if desired so that characters and digits can be easily recognized even in dark rooms.

With the keyboard, texts could be typed comfortably in the test, the stroke is short, precise - but a bit soft.

The large touchpad, which transferred inputs accurately and without delays, was also convincing.

Ice Lake processor in the Medion Akoya E15408

And what's under the hood of the new Aldi notebook?

-

Processor: The

heart of the Medion is Intel's Ice Lake CPU Core i5-1035G4, whose four cores work with a base clock of 1.1 gigahertz.

-

RAM:

The processor can move data to an 8 gigabyte RAM, that's okay.

Deficiency: It cannot be expanded if necessary.

Medion has soldered it firmly to the motherboard.

SSD:

An SSD in slim M.2 format is available for programs and data.

Too bad: It only offers 238 gigabytes of storage.

But: If that's not enough, you can easily retrofit a second M.2 SSD thanks to the maintenance flap on the bottom (1 terabyte from 130 euros).

Strong home office notebook

The technology used is not a high-end component, but is typical of a mid-range notebook like the Medion.

The pace of work was still okay in the test.

After pressing the power button, the Aldi notebook was ready to go in around nine seconds.

Then it did the exhausting compilation of a video from several cell phone clips without long waiting times.

For working in the home office with Word, Excel, SAP and Internet applications, it is almost oversized.

Expandable: The battery only lasted four hours without a socket when working - that's enough at most.

Not outstanding, but significantly better: In contrast, the video playback allowed almost five hours.

Conclusion:

If you are looking for a new and above all affordable notebook for the home office, you will not go wrong with the Medion Akoya E15408, which costs 499 euros: Sure, it is not a high-end notebook, but it works quickly, is well equipped and is nice and light for a 15-inch device.

It's a shame that it doesn't have much SSD storage.

At least a second SSD can easily be retrofitted.

Strengths:

satisfactory (3.0)
