When moving or changing car, updating of the registration certificate (ex-carte grise) must be done within a specified time.

But what to do in the event of a change in their marital status?

Today, spouses can choose the name of use that suits them: that of their husband or wife or a double name made up of their two respective surnames in the desired order.

However, although it is not compulsory to pass on the change in civil status to your registration card, it is still recommended to avoid any trouble, in the event of an accident for example.

A provisional certificate

This process is simple, free and can be done without respecting an imposed deadline.

Everything is done online, on the official teleservice of the National Agency for Secured Titles (ANTS), in charge of this type of process.

It is necessary to have a scanner or a smartphone to transmit the required supporting documents (domicile, registration document, family record book or extract of marriage certificate).

If you are not equipped at home, digital points are available to you in each prefecture and in most of the sub-prefectures.

At the end of the procedure, you will obtain a provisional registration certificate to print, which allows you to travel for one month in France, while waiting to receive the gray card.

Note that the procedure for modifying civil status is the same for removing a common name in the event of divorce (a copy of the judgment must be sent) or in the event of the death of one of the two spouses if the vehicle was to both names.
