The UAE is the first country in the Middle East to launch an additional 500 MHz band for Wi-Fi networks

The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority announced the expansion of the available frequency spectrum for Wi-Fi networks, by adding a 500 MHz frequency in the 6 GHz band for the new generation of Wi-Fi networks, making the UAE the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to launch this frequency in The 6 GHz band (specifically 5925 - 6425 MHz) with a maximum transmission power of 250 milliwatts (EIRP) is allowed for internal use of Wi-Fi networks only.

This measure aims to boost the speed of internal wireless networks to keep pace with the increasing usage by individuals, institutions and various sectors.

It also aims to increase the capacity to accommodate new applications that need higher speeds and greater reliability, and the Wi-Fi network gains its importance through the connection between individuals, workplaces, companies, education, healthcare and others.

This decision comes in line with the UAE Spectrum Outlook 2020-2025, which lays out a roadmap for providing available spectrum resources for various emerging wireless technologies, and as a result of engaging stakeholders through public advice.

This measure reflects the TRA’s keenness to enhance the regional and global leadership of the United Arab Emirates in the field of communications and information technology, and confirms that it is one of the most forward-looking regulatory bodies.

Commenting on this step, Director General of the Authority, Hamad Al-Mansoori, said: “The special circumstance that the world has gone through in the past months confirmed the need to support the systems of internal Internet networks Wi-Fi, to meet the growing needs of companies, families and individuals, especially with the adoption of forms of remote work and distance learning. , E-commerce, video calling and other activities that require high internet speeds, and the use of many smart devices on the same network at the same time.

Al Mansoori emphasized that the United Arab Emirates always seeks to enhance the communication infrastructure and the efficiency of its national resources.

He added, "We are looking forward to meeting the increasing requirements of individuals in society and the business sector in the country with regard to communication and information technology services. We are also working continuously to encourage investment in internal Internet networks and other wireless technologies, which will contribute to accelerating the digital transformation in the country and achieving its aspirations for the next 50 years." ".

The authority announced that 99% of homes in the United Arab Emirates have the advantage of accessing the Internet according to the database of the International Telecommunication Union published in June 2020, and the Wi-Fi network plays a key role in providing Internet connection according to the latest standards, which can reach the maximum data speed with it 10 Gigabits per second, providing faster latency and higher communication efficiency in proportion to the increasing number of home electronic devices such as smart TVs, game consoles, smartphones, tablets, remote controls, 3D masks, laptops, etc.

The UAE has made great progress in the global competitiveness indicators for the telecommunications sector, according to the United Nations Smart Government Survey Report 2020, as it ranks first in the Gulf, Arab and West Asia, and seventh globally and second in Asia in the telecommunications infrastructure index.
