In turn, officials of sales outlets told "Emirates Today" that there is a decline in the purchase of some goods, as a result of the repercussions of the pandemic, especially clothing and accessories, travel supplies and gifts, and school supplies, expecting an increase in demand for healthy and organic foods during the next year, in addition to the continued demand. On sports gear.

In detail, consumer Muhammad Al-Ameri said that his family's consumption during the year 2020 focused on food commodities, especially healthy foods, as well as masks, sterilizers, detergents, devices and tools for exercising.

Al-Amiri explained that his spending has decreased significantly on clothes, due to the decline in exit habits, as well as the decline in spending on travel supplies, due to the restrictions imposed by the spread of the new Corona virus (Covid-19) on travel.

Consumer Noura Adel agreed that family consumption during the year 2020 will focus on fresh food and commodities for precautionary measures to prevent "Covid-19", such as masks, sterilizers, and disinfectants, in addition to hygiene and personal care tools.

She drew attention to the purchase of computers and special supplies such as headphones and cameras, to provide the requirements of "remote work" and "remote study", with the decline in the purchase of clothes, accessories, shoes, and bags.

For his part, consumer Hani Safwan pointed out the decline in the purchase of travel supplies, after they were a main item in his annual expenses due to the nature of his work and his travel abroad, as well as the decline in the purchase of school supplies for his children.

He said that the expenditures focused on food, while following procedures that required staying at home during the closures, and reducing dependence on eating outside, noting an increase in spending on masks, sterilizers, cleaning tools, and children's toys.

For his part, the official spokesperson and director of the Corporate Communication Department at the "Lulu Group of Commercial Centers", Nanda Kumar, said that masks, sterilizers, personal hygiene goods and detergents topped the best-selling commodities during 2020, especially during the first period of the pandemic.

He added that with the passage of time, and the control of the outbreak of the epidemic, purchases of these goods decreased somewhat, and foodstuffs returned to the forefront of goods sold again, pointing to a strong trend towards healthy and organic foods, as well as fresh foods, juices, and foods that contain less fat. In the same context, the Chairman of the Consumer Cooperative Union and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Union Cooperative Society, Majid Hamad Rahma Al Shamsi, said that the necessary commodities, especially food, masks and sterilizers, topped the best-selling commodities this year.

Al Shamsi pointed to a decline in the sale of some luxury goods, such as durable goods, new models of smartphones, electronics, clothes, high-priced branded shoes and bags, and travel bags in general, stressing that the repercussions of the pandemic imposed rationalization of spending and focus on necessities.

Al-Khaja expected that the year 2021 will witness continued demand for foodstuffs, health and organic products, pointing out that the demand for masks and sterilizers depends on the continuation of the pandemic.

The Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society confirmed that food commodities topped the list of best-selling products in 2020, including fresh food and canned foods, followed by masks and sterilizers that were among the best sellers in the context of adherence to the precautionary measures.
