Production launch of the Volkswagen -

DR

Passed under British control after the Second World War, the city of Wolfsburg had been devastated by the Allied bombardments.

In the rubble of the Volkswagenwerk GMBH, a factory which had greatly contributed to the German war effort, the British army found a copy of the people's car wanted by Hitler and designed by Ferdinand Porsche.

At this time, Great Britain had a great need for cars, but its industry was unable to keep up with the demand.

With machines found here and there and the help of local labor, the British army then put the Volkswagen in production from December 27, 1945. Only 55 copies of the car were manufactured that year, a figure that will increase to 1000 copies per month in 1946. However, the shortage of materials greatly hampered production.

In 1947, Volkswagen's distribution network grew and the car began to be exported.

It was not until 1949 that the British army passed control of the factory to the West German government.

A real global success, this popular car will be produced in more than 21 million units until… 2013!
