There is a whole section of varied and unknown coverage to the general public, intended for certain activities or products.

These are affinity insurance.

A lucrative market which represents an annual turnover of 2 to 3 billion euros in France.

But what are we talking about?

Protect anything and everything

The Federation of Guarantees and Affinity Insurance defines these coverages as "any insurance, assistance or ancillary service guarantee related to the universe of a product or service presented by a non-insurer distributor and which is not the main reason for the customer's purchase ”.

More concretely, these protections were initially invented to take into account the particular risks taken by hunters, boating enthusiasts or even expatriates.

Except that their scope has since extended to all sectors, products and events.

Whether you take out a cancellation guarantee for a concert ticket, to protect your smartphone, your glasses or even to anticipate water leaks, it is indeed affinity insurance.

Limited coverage

Some 73% of Europeans have already taken affinity insurance at one point or another, according to a 2016 Harris poll. Most therefore feel that this protection will pay off in the event of a problem (42%) and feel protected ( 32%).

By reflex, most households take out this type of coverage to protect themselves against any breakdown of their household appliances or high-tech equipment.

Except that they are often unaware that the legal guarantee of conformity, which operates for two years following the purchase of a new good, allows them to obtain the replacement or repair, or even the reimbursement of the latter, therefore. that they have noticed a defect and without having to prove to the professional that the product is defective.

Think about the alternatives

The covers offered at the time of purchase of the product are often expensive in relation to the security they provide.

Even if it means taking out affinity insurance, it is better to turn to specialized companies that allow more complete protection.

Before committing, remember to check your existing contracts to avoid duplicates.

Multi-risk home insurance can thus cover your mobile devices against theft, broken glass and electrical accidents, thanks to a system of options.

Likewise, all-risk automobile contracts generally include a “personal effects” cover which covers the theft of your property in your vehicle.

Do not forget either the insurance associated with certain premium bank cards, which offer a varied range of protections.
