100-hertz televisions already existed in the blissful days of tubes.

They should finally stop flickering.

With flat screen televisions, 100 Hertz have a completely different meaning.

"Computer Bild" explains in the test what that is and why the new Samsung Q70T is one of the most attractive televisions of this type.

What does 100 Hertz actually mean?

The 100 Hertz stand for double the refresh rate.

Televisions normally show 50 frames per second (50 Hz), depending on the source of the video, it can also be 48 or 60 Hz.

This sequence of images is sufficient for smooth movements on the screens.

Because modern flat screens let each individual image stand until it overwrites the next image, our perception plays a trick on us: This makes fast movements look blurred.

High-quality televisions therefore double the frame rate to 100 Hertz, depending on the video material, this can also be 96 or 120 Hz - for the sake of simplicity, 100 Hz is always used.

For clearer movements it would be sufficient to insert a black image between each individual image.

Then, however, the screen flickers.

For this reason, 100-Hertz televisions calculate and insert intermediate images.

The result is sharper movements without image flickering.

Computer monitors sometimes work with even higher frame rates, which gamers in particular benefit from.

There were also 200-Hertz televisions once, but currently the limit is 100 Hz.

Higher manufacturer information is advertising nonsense.

The special features of QLED and dual LED

display

In addition to 100 Hz, the screen of the Samsung Q70T can also come up with special lighting technology: Samsung uses an LCD screen as the basis, as usual, LEDs illuminate it as a light source (backlight, often unhappily translated into background lighting).

Samsung uses LEDs with two different colors and expects greater efficiency and viewing angle stability from this.

So-called quantum dots are also incorporated into the diffusing film for light distribution between LEDs and LCD panel, which is where the abbreviation QLED comes from.

With the Samsung Q70T, the HD + app allows the reception of private HD programs via satellite with on-board resources; the first six months are free

Quantum dots are microscopic particles that give the backlight a particularly wide range of colors.

This enables the screen to display more colors than usual.

This is how good the image quality of the Samsung Q70 is

display

And what's the point?

The benefits of the dual LED technology were not really noticeable in the test; colors fade when viewed from the side and the picture quickly looks flat.

The color matching is good, just a tad too cool with a slight excess of blue.

The Samsung Q70T shows its full potential with HDR films that contain more colors and a greater contrast range.

In the test, he turned it up to a maximum brightness of 530 candelas per square meter (nits), he was able to display most of the extended color spectrum (up to 86 percent), and all of this with a beautiful naturalness.

The dual LED backlight is always fully lit, the television cannot dim it locally behind dark areas.

Nevertheless, the Q70T achieved a decent deep black and good contrast.

Thanks to the UHD resolution, there is nothing to complain about in terms of sharpness anyway, the Samsung also combined this with beautifully clear movements - an undisputed advantage of 100 Hertz.

The best picture settings for the Samsung Q70T

After the initial installation, the Samsung showed bright, cool images with unsightly smoothed details, which is typical for the standard setting from Samsung.

This can be remedied very easily; a change to the

film mode

leads to much more natural colors and finely displayed textures.

As an alternative, Samsung has also introduced the uniform Filmmaker mode for all manufacturers, so the picture is a little darker, but otherwise not better.

Only an excess of blue that increased with increasing brightness clouded the otherwise very good impression.

Related dual LED models also showed this, but not other Samsung televisions.

Perfectionists can slow down the slight excess of blue in the expert settings: In the

submenu

, a

B offset

and

reduced to -5

with a

to the goal.

Whether the television smooths movements or lets cinema films stutter is left to the taste of the audience.

If the television is too bright in a dark environment, the automatic brightness control is activated.

You can even choose the minimum brightness.

The default setting (18) is a bit tight, from 25 the picture looks more brilliant.

The Samsung Q70T is an affordable gaming TV

Samsung has also placed the game mode, which is mandatory for gamers, in an unusual position in the menu: It can be activated in the General sub-item under External device management.

If you also switch off Motion Plus for games, the Samsung reduces the time lag between video playback and display (latency) to a very good 11 milliseconds.

There is no noticeable time lag between an action on the game controller and the movement of the game character on the screen.

With Motion Plus switched on, the latency doubles, but then movements run more smoothly - gamers can choose individual priorities.

The picture settings in the Smart Hub menu bar can also be changed quickly with a press of the home button.

The Filmmaker Mode offers no advantages over the Film mode

Class for the new Playstation 5 and XBox Series X game consoles: The Samsung Q70T also processes variable frame rates (VRR including AMD Freesync) at its HDMI inputs (HDMI 2.1), as well as 4K resolution with up to 120 frames per second.

At the moment, the Q70T is likely to be the cheapest TV with these capabilities.

Samsung has the best selection of apps

Film and series fans will get their money's worth with Samsung anyway.

No other manufacturer offers such a comprehensive range of apps for its televisions as Samsung: The streaming apps from Amazon Prime Video and Netflix as well as YouTube and media libraries are already set, but the apps for Apple TV, Disney, Netzkino, Sky can also be used and install others.

If the television program comes into the house by satellite, the HD + app enables the reception of the private HD channels without an additional decryption module, even free of charge for the first six months (instead of just under 6 euros per month).

The HD + app, however, extends the switching times, which is nothing for hectic zappers.

In return, recordings on the USB hard drive are also possible from private HD channels, and for some programs there is even a restart function via the media library.

Sports fans should like the Sportworld app from Samsung.

The offers a program preview for football, Formula 1 and other adjustable sports and clearly shows which channel or streaming service is on.

Conclusion:

As the cheapest 100-Hertz television from Samsung, the Q70T knows how to please sports, film and series fans as well as gamers.

His picture pleases with rich colors, decent brightness and good contrast, the high image sharpness is retained even in fast movements.

The sound quality is also okay, even if speech sounds a bit cloudy.

The fact that it is also currently the cheapest TV that explores the technical possibilities of the new generation of gaming consoles is a nice bonus.

Versions and type designation

The tested model GQ65Q70T has a 164 centimeter (65 inch) screen, ideal for a distance of around three meters from the audience.

Samsung also offers it a size smaller than the GQ55Q70T with a screen diagonal of 140 centimeters, as well as the GQ75Q70T with 190 centimeters and the gigantic 85-inch GQ85Q70T with 215 centimeters.

display

If the type designation does not start with GQ but with QE, it is a so-called EU model.

Not all apps can be installed on EU models, and the satellite installation can also be problematic.

However, the Internet offers of EU models are currently more expensive and therefore doubly uninteresting.

The Samsung Q84 offered a more vivid picture with more depth and higher contrast in the test - for around 20 percent surcharge.
