Manufacturers usually give their gaming PCs names of monsters, predators or warriors and an aggressive styling with a lot of blingbling.

And what does Dell do?

Leaves it with a fairly sloping fine rib on the front and glass on the side and then also calls the box "Inspiron" - like his good office computers.

And understatement doesn't hurt if the performance is right under the hood.

Of the various variants of the Dell Inspiron G5, a medium-sized model was tested: with a Core i7 processor and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics card.

The cheapest Inspiron G5 starts with a Core i5 from 850 euros.

On request, there are more lavishly equipped models with more memory and faster graphics.

"Computer Bild" tested the gaming PC.

Dell Inspiron G5: a lot of speed, little memory

With eight computing cores and a clock frequency of three gigahertz, the Core i7 makes good speed;

The Dell just missed a very good mark in Office programs.

Even with performance-hungry software such as Photoshop or video editing programs, the PC really accelerates.

A bit more speed would be possible with more RAM, but Dell only installs an eight gigabyte (GB) module.

Advantage: When upgrading later, you do not have to remove this module, but add a second one.

However, the processor can only deliver top speed with memory modules of the same design.

The SSD is also a bit small with just 477 GB.

No matter which monitor, the Dell Inspiron G5 has a suitable connection: DVI, HDMI and Displayport

In view of the storage requirements of current games, things get tight quickly - but the Inspiron offers three bays for installing hard drives or SSDs with SATA connections as well as six fast USB 3.2 sockets for external drives.

There are two USB 2.0 sockets for gaming accessories such as a headset or gamepad;

Keyboard and mouse are docked to two additional USB 2.0 sockets.

Dell Inspiron G5 with useful extras

Passionate gamers plan a little extra budget for the input devices.

Keyboard and mouse are included, but these are simple models for everyday office use.

It doesn't have to be a professional gamer keyboard like the test winner Razer Black Widow Chroma for 180 euros: A cheaper model like the Sharkoon Skiller Pro + for 45 euros does the same.

Even with gaming mice, there are inexpensive devices such as the Rapoo Vpro V280 (35 euros) if the budget does not yield 80 euros for the test winner Logitech G703.

If you want to install games from CD or DVD, you have to plan for a DVD drive with a USB connection, such as the Asus Zendrive U9M for 36 euros;

The Dell has no installation slot for an internal drive.

As soft as butter in Full HD

The graphics card of the Dell is "only" a medium model from Nvidia, but fast enough for gaming in Full HD (1920x1080 pixels): With DirectX 11 games it averaged 149 frames per second, while more complex DirectX 12 games were 73 frames per second included - that brings the top grade 1.0 in both cases.

Only at 4K with its 3840x2160 pixels does the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti slowly run out of breath.

It still brings DirectX 11 games smoothly to the screen at 49 frames per second, but the power is no longer sufficient for DirectX 12 games in 4K.

But overall, the GTX 1660 Ti in the Dell is hardly any slower than the GeForce RTX 2060 in many more expensive gaming PCs.

The Dell Inspiron G5 remains quiet and economical

display

Numerous gaming PCs are not only expensive but also loud.

The Dell is quite reluctant: In normal operation (0.4 sone) it should hardly be audible if it is under the desk, as is usual for tower cases.

The fans turn up under full load and during games, but the volume remained bearable with 3.4 sone in the test.

When players wear a headset, they no longer hear much from the fans and are more likely to enjoy the low power consumption.

Conclusion:

With the Inspiron G5, Dell proves its competence for gaming PCs.

In the test, it scored with high speed when working and playing, although it remained pleasantly quiet and economical in normal operation.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer saved on the memory equipment.

With eight GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD, this is just under, but it can be expanded generously.

Strengths:

very high working pace, very high gaming pace, many retrofitting options

Weaknesses:

little memory

Test grade:

good (2.3)
