The first "Barakah" plants for peaceful nuclear energy is preparing for final tests in preparation for commercial operation in early 2021

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation announced the success of its subsidiary Nawah Energy Company, which is responsible for operating and maintaining the Barakah peaceful nuclear energy plants, in achieving a new achievement, represented by the arrival of the first plant reactor in Barakah to 100 percent of its production capacity, in a step that paves the way for commercial operation at the beginning of 2021.

This achievement means that the first plant in Barakah produces 1,400 megawatts, making it the largest single source of electrical energy in the UAE.

Barakah stations have become the largest source of environmentally friendly primary load electricity in the UAE, capable of providing a stable, reliable and sustainable supply of energy around the clock, as this achievement contributes to accelerating the process of reducing the carbon footprint of the energy sector and supporting the state's efforts to diversify its energy portfolio during the phase. Transition to environmentally friendly energy sources.

This exceptional achievement was achieved a few days after the celebration of the 49th National Day, to provide a tangible example of the country's great progress in developing a safe and sustainable energy sector, and a prosperous future for the country.

As the UAE moves forward to achieve more achievements in the next 50 years, the four Barakah plants, when operational, will provide 25 percent of the country's electrical energy needs to support progress and sustainable development for the coming decades and beyond.

In this regard, His Excellency Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, said, "The first station in Barakah represents a new era in the energy sector and the future of the emission-free economy in the country, as it has become the largest source of energy free of emissions."

He added, "We are also proud of the Emirati competencies that work side by side with global expertise working in plants to provide environmentally friendly electric power to the UAE according to the highest international standards of safety, security and quality."

Nawah Energy Company is responsible for operating the first plant in Barakah, as its operating team has worked to increase the energy levels in the plant’s reactor in a steady, gradual and safe manner, since the plant’s operation began in July 2020 and connected to the main electricity grid in August 2020.

The arrival of the first plant in Barakah to 100 percent of its production capacity falls within the final steps of the upward energy test. The next step will be to conduct some tests and then stop operating the plant reactor completely and safely in preparation for the start of the final and final tests, which include a series of safety tests and work. Maintenance to ensure that the plant is ready for commercial operation early next year.

For his part, Chief Executive Officer of Nawah Energy Company, Engineer Ali Al Hammadi, said that the first plant reactor reaches 100 percent of its production capacity successfully, safely and in full control by our highly trained and certified operators, confirming our commitment to safe and sustainable operations, as we undertake maintenance work. Final in preparation for commercial operation in 2021. "

The process of progressive energy testing is being carried out under the constant supervision of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, which has so far carried out 287 inspections since the start of the development of the Barakah Peaceful Nuclear Power Plants Project, in addition to more than 40 assessment and review missions by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the International Association of Nuclear Operators.

This achievement has been achieved safely despite the challenges posed by the spread of the new Corona virus (Covid-19). Since the start of this global epidemic, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and its subsidiaries have worked;

Nawah Energy Company and Barakah Al-Oula Company, in addition to the companies affiliated with the Korean work team closely and in line with the guidelines of the federal and local health authorities to ensure the highest standards of health and safety for workers on the project.

In addition, tight business continuity plans for the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation were activated along with comprehensive preventive measures and administrative procedures for containing the emerging corona virus, including control of entry and exit processes, comprehensive checks and analysis of sewage water samples, in order to ensure that all health and safety conditions are met.

The Barakah Peaceful Nuclear Power Plants in the Al Dhafra region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is one of the largest new nuclear energy projects in the world and includes four advanced APR1400 reactors.

The first construction works started in the year 2012 and these works continue to progress safely and steadily, as the construction works in the third and fourth stations have reached their final stages with 93 per cent in the third station and 87 per cent in the fourth station, depending on the lessons learned from the first and second stations, while they have reached The overall achievement rate in the four stations is 95 percent.

When fully operational, the four Barakah plants will provide 25 percent of the UAE's needs for reliable and environmentally friendly electrical energy and reduce 21 million tons of carbon emissions every year, which equates to removing 3.2 million vehicles from the UAE's roads annually.
