According to a calculation by the Institut der Deutschen Wirtschaft (IW), the federal government's November and December aid will be ten billion euros higher than necessary.

As WELT AM SONNTAG reports, the companies affected, especially in the catering and event industry, earn more money in many cases than if they were open thanks to the compensation from the state.

With reference to figures from the Bundesbank, the IW assumes that on average half of the costs in the sectors concerned are variable, i.e. they do not even arise when the companies are closed.

Nevertheless, 75 percent of sales in the same month of 2019 will be replaced across the board for all businesses.

Altmaier suggests that the aid will not go beyond December

Although there are differences between the individual sectors, across all those affected, around every third euro of the around 30 billion euros estimated by the federal government for November and December would be paid too much.

Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) indicates to WELT AM SONNTAG that the industries affected cannot count on this type of aid beyond December.

“This in no way justifies a new automatic.

We'll have to think about what to do if we need long, far-reaching restrictions, ”says Altmaier.

However, he defended the announced aid for November and December: "Of course, the orientation towards sales is not one hundred percent fair, but no criterion can ensure absolute fairness in each individual case," he told the newspaper.

Clear criticism comes from the opposition.

"We need Corona aid that will also function fairly in the long term and that will handle taxpayers' money responsibly," said Claudia Müller, SME representative of the Greens in the Bundestag.

It cannot be that far too much is being received by some and far too little is being received by others, such as self-employed people or retailers.

Christian Dürr, deputy parliamentary group leader of the FDP, believes that permanent tax relief is a much better strategy.

Left parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch also calls on the federal government to make corrections: "If there is evidence of overcompensation, it must be corrected," he told the newspaper.
