The House of Representatives has begun deliberations on a bill seeking approval from the Diet of the EPA = Economic Partnership Agreement between Japan and the United Kingdom.

Foreign Minister Motegi emphasized the significance of "leading to further promotion of trade and investment."

The UK-Japan EPA, which was signed by the ministers in October following the UK's withdrawal from the EU-European Union, began deliberations on a bill seeking parliamentary approval at the plenary session of the House of Representatives on November 12.

Among them, Foreign Minister Motegi said, "By concluding the agreement, we can continue to secure the profits that we have obtained under the Economic Partnership Agreement between Japan and the EU, and we can also secure the business continuity of Japanese companies. It will lead to further promotion of trade and investment with the UK, "he emphasized its significance.



Under the agreement, the EPAs of Japan and the EU will be largely followed, and tariffs on automobiles exported from Japan will be eliminated in 2026, while no new tariffs will be imposed on imported agricultural products.



In addition, in the field of electronic commerce, with the aim of restraining information management by the state seen in China and other countries, measures are taken to limit the intervention of both countries in the exchange of corporate data necessary for business. Rule is stipulated.



The government has a policy of aiming for prompt approval in the current extraordinary Diet session, and if the procedures on the British side go smoothly, the agreement is expected to come into effect on January 1, next year.
