Nighttime production will be stopped from November 16 at the PSA plant in Rennes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As a result, 500 positions, mainly temporary workers recruited in August, will be "suspended", indicated the management of the plant.

“Our sales network is closed and we anticipate a 25% drop in the automotive market,” said a PSA communications manager, adding that contract workers “will not be renewed or will find themselves on short-time work”.

Employees on open-ended contracts will be assigned to a day shift and will double some of their colleagues.

These positions were directly linked to the success of the C5 Aircross.

The unions "worried about the future of the site"

The information was announced during an extraordinary social and economic committee (CSE) on Friday.

"This announcement causes a lot of bitterness, even if everyone expected it a little because sales fall dramatically, reacted Laurent Valy, CFDT delegate, first union of the plant, and secretary of the CSE.

It's a suspension but we have no certainty that the team will be recovered, we are breaking a night shift that we were proud to have managed to recover at the end of August ”.

“More generally, we are worried about the future of the site because a vehicle production project is decided three years before marketing.

However, for the moment there is no vehicle allocated to Rennes.

PSA has entered into an agreement with the region to manufacture automobiles in La Janais until 2024. However, that year, the two vehicles we produce will be at the end of their life, ”added the trade unionist.

The Rennes-La Janais factory, which employs around 2,200 people and 800 temporary workers, manufactures the 5008 and C5 Aircross.
