The election of Joe Biden to the presidency of the United States makes some hope the end of the trade tensions which reign between them and the countries of Europe, in particular France.

Julien Denormandie, however, calls Monday on Europe 1 to have "no naivety" on a possible agreement to be found.

INTERVIEW

Will the election of Joe Biden be enough to ease the trade tensions that reign between Europe and the United States?

For Julien Denormandie, Minister of Agriculture and Food, nothing is less certain.

"There should be no naivety. American taxes often exceed presidents, it is also the American administrations that put them in place," he said Monday on Europe 1. However, he hopes that the departure of Donald Trump " will change the climate "for discussions and facilitate the adoption of agreements.

Towards the end of the tax on French wines?

In July, Donald Trump denounced the tax on the American digital giants (Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon in particular) that Paris had just put in place.

In retaliation, the future former US president announced the taxation of French wines.

"Donald Trump has put in place a tax which means that all bottles of wine arriving in the United States are taxed at 25%. This obviously has enormous consequences for our wine producers. I dare to hope that with the arrival of the Biden administration, we will manage to put an end to it, ”said Julien Denormandie.

Nevertheless, Julien Denormandie calls not to be "naive" and not to hesitate to "show the muscles" if the discussions slip.

"Europe is an essential market for the Americans. So, on the one hand, we show that we are ready to take retaliatory measures too. On the other hand, we are engaging in this dialogue by asserting that this trade war , ultimately, does not make sense. "

French diplomacy is "strongly mobilized" on the subject, said the minister.
