I told you about the United States earlier.

Biden's election is expected to lead to significant changes in the environment and energy fields.

As we set the goal of cultivating an eco-friendly, clean energy industry and reducing carbon emissions to zero by 2050, it is expected to have a significant impact on our industry.

Reporter No. Gyu analyzed it.

Promise of

Biden's presidential campaign website: Today, I'm announcing the plan for the'Clean Energy Revolution.'

In his first term, he said he would invest 2 trillion dollars and about 2,230 trillion KRW of our money to create 1 million jobs through high-efficiency construction and the supply of eco-friendly cars.

The goal is to achieve the so-called'Net Zero', which eliminates all carbon emissions by 2050 by maintaining the existing nuclear power plants but by growing the renewable energy industry.

It is an opportunity for the battery for electric vehicles, where Korea is strong, and for the renewable energy industry such as solar and wind power.

But at the same time, it can act as a trade barrier using environmental regulations.

[Jongho Hong/Professor, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Seoul National University: It is a double-edged sword.

By introducing decarbonization policies (in your own country), you can also take measures such as some export restrictions on (foreign) companies that do not meet this norm.]

Biden's camp is also talking about the creation of a so-called'carbon border adjustment tax' that lowers price competitiveness by imposing tariffs on products produced in countries with high carbon emissions.

At first, it seems to be a check against China, but Korea is also poorly prepared.

The Korean government has declared to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050, but has not yet specified the country's 2030 greenhouse gas reduction target.

If pressure to strengthen reduction targets comes in, it could be disadvantageous to Korea, which has a high proportion of the manufacturing industry. In particular, industries with high carbon emissions, such as petrochemicals and steel, could be hurt.

It is pointed out that Biden's eco-friendly policy is a good thing and a risk factor for Korea, so preparation is necessary.
