Convenience store Electronic tag to reduce food loss Automatic price reduction when expiration date is approaching November 2, 18:58

In order to reduce so-called "food loss," experiments have begun, such as attaching a small device called an "electronic tag" to a convenience store product and automatically reducing the price of products that are about to expire.

This experiment was started by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in collaboration with a major convenience store, and attaches an "electronic tag" containing information on the expiration date to products such as rice balls and bento boxes.

The information on the "electronic tag" is managed by a reader installed in the display shelf, and the price of products that are about to expire is automatically reduced, and points that can be used for shopping are awarded.

You can check which products are eligible and how many points will be awarded with the tablet installed on the shelf or the smartphone app.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry says that using "electronic tags" will make it easier for stores to manage products and for consumers to find products that give points.

Masamichi Ito, Director of the Consumption and Distribution Policy Division of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, said, "In order to solve the problem of food loss, it is necessary to create an environment that makes it easier for consumers to find products. This experiment will lead to reduction of food loss. I hope it will be an opportunity. "
