Seat Oryzite -

DR

As part of an innovation pilot project based on the circular economy, and with the aim of reducing its carbon footprint, Seat is studying the use of Oryzite as a substitute for plastic products.

Oryzite is made from 60% or more of rice husks (a by-product derived from rice husking), mixed with thermoplastic products.

This material is therefore more durable than traditional plastic.

According to Seat, more than 700 million tonnes of rice are harvested each year around the world.

20% of this volume is made up of rice husks, or about 140 million tonnes, most of which is thrown away.

So there is plenty to do ...

Lightness

Concretely, the tests carried out by Seat consist in modeling certain parts of the car, such as the rear hatch, the double loading floor of the trunk or the headliner, with rice husks mixed with polyurethanes and polypropylenes.

At first glance, they do not differ in any way from those produced using conventional technologies, but they weigh much less.

And we know that the lighter a car, the less it consumes.

It remains to be seen whether these new renewable materials offer the same strength.

This is the whole point of the tests carried out by Seat…
