China's chicken farming is at a loss

Chen Guanghua, deputy director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said on the 21st.

　　At the press conference on the agricultural and rural economic situation in the first three quarters of 2020 held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs that day, Chen Guanghua introduced the situation of the decline in chicken prices.

　　He said that according to monitoring, the retail price of white striped chicken in the national bazaar in the second week of October was 21.69 yuan per kilo, a year-on-year decrease of 13.3%. The average loss of a broiler chicken in the first three quarters was 30 cents.

　　Talking about the reasons for the decline in chicken prices, Chen Guanghua said that it was mainly affected by the increase in production and supply and the sluggish consumption during the new crown pneumonia epidemic. In addition, the supply of pork has gradually increased as production resumes, and the substitution effect of chicken on pork consumption has weakened.

　　From the supply side, chicken production has increased significantly.

Chen Guanghua said that in the first three quarters of this year, broiler production increased by 5.2% year-on-year, 9.8% higher than the average level in the past five years.

From the perspective of demand, the new crown pneumonia epidemic has affected chicken consumption to a certain extent. In the first three quarters, the volume of white striped chicken in the national bazaar fell by 15.8% year-on-year. Since March, the supply of pork has improved significantly, which has also reduced the demand for chicken consumption.

　　Chen Guanghua said that the stock of broilers has begun to decline recently, but it is still at a historical high.

The chicken market has loose supply, and prices in the fourth quarter will continue to run low.

　　"Farmers are accelerating the adjustment of excess production capacity, coupled with the New Year's Day and the Spring Festival consumption season is coming soon, it is expected that the market will gradually pick up, and the breeding efficiency is expected to gradually recover." Chen Guanghua said.
