Winter chains or tires will be compulsory from November 1, 2021 on mountainous roads.

The prefects of the departments located in these zones (Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Jura Massif, Pyrenees, Vosges Massif) will have to draw up the list of communes where vehicle equipment will be compulsory during the winter period.

This runs from November 1 to March 31, said Road Safety on Monday in a press release.

This list will be drawn up "with and after consultation with the local elected officials concerned", as provided for in a decree of 16 October.

All affected vehicles

Light vehicles, utility vehicles and camper vans must either have removable non-slip devices (metal or textile snow chains), allowing at least two drive wheels to be fitted, or be fitted with four winter tires (marked "M + S "," MS "or" M & S ").

Coaches, buses and heavy goods vehicles without a trailer or semi-trailer will be subject to the same obligations.

The other heavy goods vehicles must have snow chains enabling at least two driving wheels to be fitted, even if they are fitted with winter tires.

Currently, and until November 1, 2021, therefore, specific chain-type equipment is mandatory only on the roads where the sign is installed, when they are snow-covered.
