Nokia builds the first cellular communications network on the moon

The Finnish company "Nokia" announced today that the US Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has chosen it to build the first cellular communications network on the surface of the moon.

The lunar network will be part of the US space agency’s efforts to return humans to the moon by 2024 and build long-term settlements there as part of its Artemis program.

Nokia said the first wireless broadband communication system in space will be set up on the moon's surface in late 2022 before humans return there.

The Finnish company will partner with Texas-based private spacecraft design firm Intuitive Machines to deliver the network equipment on board its lunar lander.

"Nokia" explained that after its installation, the network will prepare itself and establish the first communications system "LTE" on the moon.

"The network will provide communication capabilities necessary for many different data transmission applications, including dynamic command and control functions, remote control of lunar vehicles, real-time navigation and broadcasting of high-definition video recordings," she added.
