Because they are full members of the family, it's hard to come to terms with letting our pets go.

When they die, despite the pain and pain, a decision must be made as to whether to cremate or bury these hairballs.

If some owners want to keep a memory, whatever it is, of their animal, others do not particularly want to.

What are the solutions available to them?

Can you bury your animal in your garden?

After the death of your cat, your dog or even your rabbit, it is normal to want to keep him close to you by erecting a stele in the garden.

Unfortunately, in this area, the law limits the possibilities.

By referring to article L. 226-2 of the Rural Code, we learn that animals over 40 kg cannot be buried and must be made available "to the person responsible for carrying out the public service. rendering ”.

Below this weight, you therefore have the right to bury your four-legged companion on condition that you own the land and that it is located at least 35 m from neighboring houses and water points, in order to avoid pollution of groundwater.

You should also bury it at least 1 m deep using a biodegradable or non-polluting shroud.

Once placed in the ground, the body will be covered with quicklime.

Please note, in France, it is forbidden to bury your animal in the family vault.

But it is a practice tolerated in other regions, such as Great Britain or Switzerland.

The choice of incineration

If you don't have the option of building a last home for your cat or dog right in the garden, you can opt for cremation by asking your vet, who will call on a cremation company.

In the case of individual cremation, you can collect the ashes of your furball in an urn, which you can spread in your garden or in nature, but certainly not on the public highway.

This type of service is billed at around 200 euros, plus the price of the ballot box.

If you opt for collective incineration, the ashes of several animals will be collected before being dispersed.

They will therefore not be returned to you.

Here, it takes around 80 euros.

Animal cemeteries

It is still possible to bury your furry companion in an animal cemetery.

On the national territory, there are about fifty, private or municipal, generally managed by animal protection associations.

They make it possible to install vaults, commemorative plaques and stelae in memory of his cat or his pooch, and offer burial in a mass grave or in an individual grave.

Obviously, these services have a cost: the price of the coffin can range from 50 to 500 euros.

It will take around 200 euros for a burial in the ground and around 1,000 euros for a vault.

To this is added the price of the concession per year, which may vary depending on the geographical location of the cemetery and the number of years during which you wish to maintain it (around 100 euros for one year).
