Goods and services not included in the value-added tax in Oman

Today, the Omani authorities announced the imposition of a value-added tax at a rate of 5%, to be applied after six months, according to a decree issued by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, reported by the "government communication" page on its account on the "Twitter" site.

The Omani authorities pointed out that "the application of value-added tax in the Sultanate comes in accordance with the unified value-added tax agreement of the Gulf Cooperation Council states."

She indicated that there is a wide list of goods and services that are not covered by the value-added tax, such as basic food commodities, services and goods for medical care, education, supplies for people with disabilities and financial services.

The tax will be applied 180 days after the decree was published in the Official Gazette, and the executive regulations will be issued after two months.

The authorities emphasized that "the application of the value-added tax comes to ensure the financial sustainability of the Sultanate and to enhance its competitiveness, and to confirm its commitment to international and regional agreements and to improve the business environment."
