The negotiation between Alcoa and the Government to try to save employment in the Galician aluminum factory in
San Ciprián (Lugo)
has been blown up.
The Ministry of Industry led by
Reyes Maroto
issued at 01:23 this morning an explosive statement denouncing the "bad faith" of the steel group and anticipating retaliation for, according to his version, refusing to negotiate a viable agreement that would guarantee the future of the factory in the hands of another industrial group.
In the last days, the Executive had thrown the order to Alcoa with an offer to buy the plant through the State Society of Industrial Participations (Sepi).
The movement went beyond the intermediation work that until then had been carried out by the ministry, in the person of the Secretary General of Industry
Raül Blanco
, to support the transaction to potential interested parties such as the British Liberty House.
The lack of agreement leaves in the air the employment of the
500 workers
linked to the Galician factory.
The company meets this Monday with workers' representatives to finalize an adjustment plan after its decision to close the facility.
The company's version is that the Maroto and Liberty proposals "are not reasonable" and included conditions outside the negotiation such as the use or potential purchase of the group's refinery located in the area.
Industry sources do not specify the type of "unfriendly" measures that the Government is studying to avoid the closure of the plant, which are being studied with the State Attorney.
Blanco has described as
"unnecessary and immoral"
the suffering with which according to his version the company is going to punish the A Mariña region, but for now it has not gone any further.
The closure is a blow for the Executive of
Pedro Sánchez,
unable to stop the growing deindustrialization of the country, aggravated by the impact of the Covid.
The company, for its part, estimates the weekly losses for keeping the plant operating at one million euros and raises
the bill
for the installation in the last two years
to
110 million
.
He links these 'red numbers' with the high cost of electricity in Spain and the lack of an energy policy capable of containing them.
According to the agreement reached on August 13 with the representatives of the workers, which was endorsed by the Spanish Government and the Xunta de Galicia, the company meets today with the works council with the sole issue of a social plan for a File of Temporary Employment Regulation (ERTE) or, in the absence of agreement on an ERTE, the application of a permanent collective dismissal.
"Alcoa cannot be required to provide more resources and financing than it has already committed to making in significant amounts in this sale process, nor to accept off-market conditions, or requests outside the scope of the agreement with representatives of workers ", explains the world metal giant in a statement in response to the Executive.
