Potato prices fell for several months in a row, falling to a three-year low

“In August, among the 19 types of vegetables monitored, potatoes fell by 3.3% month-on-month.” This is data from the “National Agricultural Products Wholesale Market Price Information System” of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

It is worth noting that among the vegetables whose prices fell sharply month-on-month in June and July, potatoes were all on the list, down 14.6% and 4.6% respectively.

Zhang Min, an analyst at Zhuochuang Information, told Chinanews.com that since the beginning of August, the price of potatoes in North China has been declining. The price in mid-September was basically at the lowest level this year.

The price trend chart of potato (potato) in North China from 2018 to 2020 by Zhuo Chuang Information shows that after June, the price of potatoes fluctuated and fell. Since the beginning of September, the price has even dropped to a three-year low, and the price is almost the same as that of Chinese cabbage.

On September 25, the average price of Chinese cabbage in Xinfadi Market in Beijing was 0.65 yuan per catty, and the average price of potatoes was 0.7 yuan per catty.

Merchant promotion, 70 cents can buy a pound of potatoes

Does the price of potatoes really fall so badly?

A reporter from Chinanews.com visited many supermarkets in Beijing.

The new potatoes are currently on the market. In a supermarket in Xicheng District, Beijing, the price tag shows 1.38 yuan per catty of new potatoes.

In a supermarket in Beijing’s Fengtai District, although the price of potatoes was 1.38 yuan per catty, the staff had already put potatoes in bags and sold them at 70 cents per catty. Seven small potatoes cost only 1.42 yuan.

In another vegetable market in Fengtai District, new potatoes are a little more expensive, 2 yuan a catty.

However, some merchants told reporters, “The price has been reduced now, and it was previously sold for 2.5 yuan.”

Not only in Beijing, but also in Zhumadian, Henan Province, some residents also reported that the price of potatoes has dropped.

"The good potatoes now cost 1.2 yuan a catty, and some time ago it was about 1.5 yuan a catty."

"Potatoes cost 9.0 cents per catty when they are not engaged in activities, and can sell for 7.9 cents per catty when they are engaged in activities," said a resident who lives in Jiaozhou, Shandong.

Tudou is also engaged in promotions on multiple e-commerce platforms.

On Meituan’s grocery shopping, about 500 grams of yellow-hearted potatoes have a spike price of 1.28 yuan.

On Daily Fresh, the exclusive price of 1,000 grams of yellow heart potatoes for newcomers is 0.99 yuan. The page shows that 53,000 people have bought them recently.

Oversupply, "

Hometown of Potatoes

" is now slow

Why did the price of potatoes continue to fall, or even a big promotion?

Zhang Min said, “This period is the period when northern sources of goods are concentrated on the market. The supply of potatoes is large, and the production capacity is in a state of oversupply, which has led to a recent price drop.”

"Because of the high price of potatoes in North China and even the whole country before May, this stimulated the expansion of potato planting areas in North China and even the entire northern first crop area." Zhang Min told reporters, "Due to the impact of the general climate this year, the average yield per mu in the main production areas is slightly lower than last year. Low, but due to the expansion of the planting area, the total output increased over last year."

"After further field investigation and verification by Zhuo Chuang before planting, after planting and after new production, the potato (potato) planting area in the first cropping area in northern China this year has increased by 3,866,400 mu compared with last year, an increase of 15.55%; the total potato output in the first cropping area this year This is an increase of 6,357,700 tons from last year, an increase of 7.77%."

"This has led to the continued decline in prices of potatoes in the first cropping area in the fall, and the phenomenon of "basically no purchases by customers during the concentrated listing period" in the Hebei Weichang area." Zhang Min pointed out.

Weichang Manchu and Mongolian Autonomous County in Hebei Province is known as the "Hometown of Potatoes in China". As early as 1979, Weichang was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture as a national potato seeding base.

The county's potato planting area has stabilized at around 750,000 mu, with a total output of 1.65 million tons.

But now here is the problem of slow sales of potatoes.

Li Xiaomei (pseudonym), who currently lives in Beijing, is from Weichang, Hebei. Since her younger brother grows potatoes, she will also help contact sales.

On September 8th, in Huailaishan Village, Wuchuan County, Hohhot City, the "shuke" was picking up potatoes and bagging them.

In a hurry, some growers sell for 30 cents per catty

"At this time in previous years, there will be large consignors coming over to collect, but this year there are very few." Li Xiaomei told reporters, "Due to poor sales of potatoes, this year's purchase price is also lower than in previous years."

"Potatoes will be priced according to the size. In previous years, the purchase price of potatoes was concentrated at 80 cents, 9 cents or even 1 yuan. This year, the purchase price of good potatoes was only 6 cents, 7 cents, which is a small two or three cents." Li Xiaomei explained, some planting The households were anxious to sell, and they sold for 40 or even 30 cents.

Many growers also chose to enter the cellar, "I want to wait until the price of potatoes rises before selling them." Li Xiaomei said.

"The source of goods in the production area is in a state of oversupply. The entire domestic wholesale market is lower than in previous years, and the spot digestion is relatively small, so growers can only choose to enter the cellar." Zhang Min said.

“The weather in the north is getting colder and frost is already happening sooner or later. The growers in various producing areas are rushing to store and enter the cellar. The inventory in the entire north is large. During this period of time, the price is low, and there is no significant increase in support for the time being.” Zhang Min said "After the National Day, when the spot purchase and storage are completed, we will continue to focus on inventory sales. However, due to the increase in inventory this year compared with previous years and the large supply, if the market demand does not follow up significantly in the later period, the upward momentum will be It will be weaker."
