Anhua County is located in the northern part of Hunan, upstream of Zishui River, with a total area of 4,950 square kilometers. It is a key county in the national poverty alleviation and development work integrating mountainous areas, reservoir areas and old revolutionary areas.

In recent years, the county has adhered to "precise poverty alleviation, industry first", relying on resource endowments to develop specialty industries such as Anhua dark tea, and achieving an organic unity of economic development and poverty alleviation of the people.

In 2019, the county achieved 90,000 tons of tea processing and a comprehensive output value of 22 billion yuan.

It is reported that for more than 10 years, Anhua dark tea has rapidly risen by leveraging the Dongfeng of the new era and new development, and has become a national geographical indication protection product and a well-known trademark in China, with a brand value assessment of 3.713 billion yuan.

With the increasing maturity of black tea ingredient extraction technology, the birth of black tea facial masks, black tea toothpaste and other series of products, the Anhua black tea industry chain continues to expand, and the market prospects are growing.

At present, Anhua dark tea has become the richest and democratic leading industry in Anhua County with the largest scale, the most famous brand, the highest comprehensive benefit, and the strongest driving ability.

After becoming bigger and stronger, the Anhua dark tea industry has also become the backbone of the industry for poverty alleviation.

The reporter walked into Dongma Village, a former national-level poverty-stricken village. In the green waters and green mountains, the smell of tea was everywhere.

“It used to be the villagers thinking of ways to go out to work, but now it’s tourists and tea merchants coming in endlessly.” said Chen Fuhua, party branch secretary of Dongma Village, Malu Town, Anhua County.

Through 7 years of targeted poverty alleviation, the current Dongma Village has changed its old appearance.

In 2014, the village and Anhua Yuntaishan Bajiao Tea Co., Ltd. jointly established the Dongshan Tea Planting Cooperative and established an industrial assistance model of "company + cooperative + farmer + base".

Tea seedlings and fertilizers are delivered free of charge, and technicians come to teach tea garden cultivation and management. The tea produced is purchased by helping companies at an insured price, which fundamentally solves the problem of lack of funds, lack of technology, and lack of sales channels for poor households.

Driven by the cooperative, every family in the village has cultivated tea gardens. The existing tea garden base is nearly 3,000 mu. The per capita net income of Dongma Village has jumped from 1,800 yuan in 2014 to 5,000 yuan in 2019.

Deng Shuangen, 30 years old this year, was a poor household.

After training and guidance by tea companies, he planted tea on his own 4 acres of land, earning an annual income of about 30,000 yuan.

Coupled with raising some chickens and ducks, his total annual income reaches more than 50,000 yuan.

Last year, Deng Shuangen renovated and rebuilt his old house and succeeded in getting rid of poverty and becoming rich.

"I used to work outside and I never thought I would be in the tea industry, but since I have such an opportunity, I am still willing to come back." Deng Shuangen said.

According to Gong Yicheng, head of the Octagonal Tea Company, the company is deeply integrating the primary, secondary and tertiary industries, and is committed to creating a tea tourism, cultural and recreational complex integrating ecological agriculture, tourism, and field experience, which can increase the collective income of the village and also Solve the employment problem of villagers.

Dongma Village is not an isolated case in Anhua. Many local villages have developed a coordinated development of planting and tourism based on the development of the tea industry, and explored a road of industrial integration.

Huangshi Village, which focuses on building a pastoral complex, is focusing on the development of green ecological agriculture and leisure tourism industry. Through the establishment of cooperatives and other operating entities, it has cultivated five characteristic agricultures such as tea, soil pigs and flat peaches, and has become a leisure agriculture cluster development demonstration village.

The village receives an average of 41,000 tourists each year, and its operating income in 2018 is more than 8.9 million yuan, which has led to employment of 500 farmers.

“Why can Anhua dark tea become a pillar industry for poverty alleviation? In addition to Anhua’s unique geographical environment and historical and cultural traditions, we have also improved our product technology through scientific research to make dark tea more suitable for modern people’s lives. Technological innovation is the core Competitiveness." Xiao Yi, deputy secretary of the Anhua County Party Committee and county magistrate, said that Anhua will adhere to ecological priority and green development, support the deep integration of tea, tourism, and health and other industries, and continue to extend outwards, and strive to create 24-hour healthy tea life.
