The total retail sales of consumer goods from January to August was 23.8 trillion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 8.6%, and the rate of decline narrowed by 1.3 percentage points from January to July.

The retail sales of goods in August was 3.0 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 1.5%, and the growth rate was 1.3 percentage points higher than the previous month.

Among the 15 categories of commodities above designated size, 12 categories achieved year-on-year growth, and the growth rate of 9 categories increased to varying degrees from the previous month.

The consumption of upgraded commodities grew rapidly, with the year-on-year growth of 25.1%, 19.0%, 15.3% and 11.8% in communication equipment, cosmetics, gold and silver jewelry, and automobiles respectively.

Consumption of basic commodities maintained an upward trend, with beverages and daily necessities increasing by 12.9% and 11.4% respectively.
