Anti-5G activists led an action in July 2020 in front of the Rennes train station where the technology is being tested.

  • In Rennes, an impact study will be carried out to find out the effects of the deployment of 5G.

  • The announcement was somewhat precipitated by national debates around the deployment of this new technology.

  • The majority demand the suspension of the deployment of 5G in Rennes, where an experiment is being carried out at the station.

“Yes, France will take the turn of 5G”, declared Emmanuel Macron.

In Rennes, we are not so categorical.

While the debate around mobile technology is raging in France, the Breton capital has positioned itself in favor of the creation of a monitoring committee in charge of "studying the consequences of the possible deployment of antennas in Rennes".

The announcement was made on Twitter by Pierre Jannin, neuroscience researcher and new municipal councilor dedicated to digital technology and innovation.

The elected representative thus hopes to see “the advantages and disadvantages of this technology for the city, its actors and its citizens”.

Beyond the intentions, the ally of Nathalie Appéré wants the suspension of the deployment of 5G in the city "while waiting for the end of this work" of study.

This choice is not surprising since it had been recorded during negotiations between two rounds between the outgoing mayor and her environmental allies.

But we recognize that his announcement "was precipitated" by the national controversy ignited by a forum of environmental mayors.

Awaiting ANSES study

Compared to the “Amish” by Emmanuel Macron, the latter do not really appreciate the president's choices.

"We consider the allocation of 5G frequencies as a passage in force while the ANSES study has not been published", tackle Matthieu Theurier and Valérie Faucheux, spokespersons for the group on the municipal council.

"Pending this impact study, we will oppose all installations in the city and the metropolis," warn environmentalists.

At the request of Mrs. La Maire de Rennes, I proposed the creation of a monitoring group to study the consequences of the possible deployment of the 5G network antennas in Rennes.

It remains to be seen what will actually be suspended.

At Rennes station, the operator Orange has indeed launched a test of 5G technology in partnership with Nokia and piloted by the Electronic Communications and Postal Regulatory Authority (ARCEP) but "it concerns frequencies that will not be available before 2022 or 2023 ”, specifies the operator.

Technically, these 26 gigahertz frequencies are very different from those of 3.5 gigahertz which will be allocated to French operators at the end of the month.

Not sure it will make a difference in the eyes of the general public though.
