A large Russian delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borissov and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and other senior officials in Damascus on Monday (September 7th).

The visit comes at a time when the country is going through a difficult economic situation, made worse by Western sanctions, and when the political process has not registered any significant breakthrough.

“Caesar” law

, passed by the US Congress, which sanctions any economic transaction. , commercial or financial with the Syrian government or those close to power.

Yuri Borisov, Russian Deputy Prime Minister, was greeted by

and said his country is working to break the " 

economic blockade

 " he said imposed on Syria by the United States and its countries. European allies, describing their positions as “

 ”.

The new Syrian constitution will be patient

Russia and Syria have agreed to implement projects already concluded between the two countries in recent years.

An agreement for the execution of 40 new projects in the energy sector was also signed on September 7.

It provides for the construction of power plants and offshore hydrocarbon exploration.

During a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart Walid el-Moallem, Sergei Lavrov, the head of Russian diplomacy, dampened hopes of a rapid breakthrough in the work of the commission charged with drafting a new Syrian constitution, under the aegis of the United Nations in Geneva.

According to him, there is no deadline for the end of this process.
