Spain is the country of all the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) with the greatest weight of tourism in the economy.

It is 12.3% of the national wealth and contributes 12.7% of employment.

However, it is one of those that has given the least aid to this strategic sector to face the crisis derived from the pandemic.

"For the economy of Spain to go well, tourism has to go well",

Antonio Garamendi, the president of the CEOE, the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations, highlighted today during the presentation of a report, prepared together with the EY firm , in which he analyzes the management of the tourism crisis caused by Covid both in Spain and in our main European competitors.

Garamendi

has asked for an extension of the ERTE, and in the case of tourism even until the tourist season begins next year.

It says that, if not, the strike will skyrocket.

13% of employment depends on tourism, but the sector has already closed the summer campaign and believes that there will not be a recovery in activity until the spring of next year.

The CEOE believes that "in the face of a crisis that has never been experienced in the sector before," a rescue plan is necessary to avoid an even greater impact than what already exists.

The employer's association has prepared a document, together with EY, that collects measures to minimize the negative effects of this debacle that

will leave losses in the sector of 99,000 million euros,

according to the calculations of Exceltur, the main association that includes companies in the sector.

Proposals

Among the measures included in the report to encourage tourism demand,

the CEOE proposes, in addition to the extension of the ERTE, the reduction to 7% during 2020 and 2021 of the tax rates

that are applied to accommodation services, restaurants, passenger transport and other services related to tourism.

It also proposes the

temporary exemption of tourist taxes,

facilitating the subscription of travel medical insurance for international tourists that cover the contingencies of the Covid, a campaign to promote Spain as a safe destination.

The CEOE recalls that tourism serves as an engine for other sectors, such as hospitality or commerce.

The air sector is closely linked, since 80% of the tourists who visit us do so by plane.

Spain has not received direct aid, while other countries (France, Germany and the Netherlands, for example) have rescued their main airlines (Air France, Lufthansa ...).

The Minister of Transport, José Luis Ábalos, announced in July an aid plan for the airline sector, details of which have not yet been given.
