IATA: Slow growth in passenger demand during July

The opening of markets in the European Schengen area contributed to the global demand for travel to Europe, but some other regions recorded lower rates than in June, and capacity decreased by 70.1% compared to 2019, and the load factor decreased to 57.9%.

In this regard, the Director General and CEO of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Alexander de Juniac said: “The travel demand crisis continues to suffer despite the slight improvement recorded compared to the June figures, and the sector will remain restricted with four out of five passengers remaining in their homes, while no The decisions of governments to reopen their borders, then close them, and then remove quarantine laws and impose them again give confidence to travelers to return to the airspace and not to airlines to re-set their schedules.

Global travel markets

International passenger demand in July decreased by 91.9% compared to July 2019, which is a slight improvement compared to the 96.8% recorded in June.

Capacity decreased by 85.2%, and load factor decreased by 38.9 percentage points to 46.4%.

European airlines recorded a significant decline in demand during July, reaching 87.1% less compared to last year, and an improvement from July's figures, which were 96.7% on an annual basis, to reflect the results of easing travel restrictions in the Schengen area, and capacity decreased by about 79.2% and the load factor 33.8 percentage points to reach 55.1%.

Air traffic for airlines in Asia and the Pacific was almost non-existent, after recording a decrease of 96.5% compared to last year, and unchanged significantly from what it recorded in July (97.1), and these rates are the worst compared to other markets.

Capacity decreased by 91.7% and load factor shrank by 47.3 percentage points to record 35.3%.

Airlines in the Middle East recorded a sharp drop of 93.3% in air traffic in July and an improvement of 96.1% compared to June.

Capacity decreased by 85.6% and load factor 43.4 to reach 38%.

North American airlines witnessed a decrease in passenger traffic by 94.5% in July, slightly improving from 97.1% in June. Capacity decreased 86.1% and load factor 53 percentage points, to reach 35%.

The rate of decline in airline traffic in Latin America reached 95% in July compared to the same period last year, and a slight improvement over June, which recorded 96.6%.

Capacity decreased by 92.6% and load factor by 27.1 percentage points to reach 58.4%, which is the highest compared to other markets.

The demand for air traffic of African companies decreased to 94.6% in July, an improvement from 97.8% recorded in June, and capacity decreased by 84.6% and the load factor was 47.1 percentage points to reach 25.4%, which is the lowest compared to other markets.
