• Crisis: end of summer early: hotels close early

The unprecedented crisis in the tourism sector is confirmed today by the INE's international tourist arrivals data.

Spain received 2.5 million foreign visitors in July, the first without mobility restrictions after months of confinement.

This figure means that 75% fewer tourists came to our country than in the same month of 2019. Then almost 10 million visited us.

The number of arrivals in July is the most representative of the real situation in the sector, since in the preceding months (from March to June) there were total or partial restrictions on mobility.

In July, international borders were opened and foreigners could already travel to Spain for tourism.

For the first time, France was the first source market, and not the United Kingdom.

597,244 tourists of this nationality arrived in our country in July (24.2% of the total), 58.4% less than in the same month last year.

The quarantines imposed by some countries, including the United Kingdom, the recommendations not to travel to Spain and other restrictions have deterred many foreigners from visiting our country this summer.

In fact, in the areas that most depend on international tourism, many hoteliers have decided to close now, due to the lack of visitors.

The United Kingdom is our main source market for tourists and the fact that France, and also Germany, have surpassed it is significant.

Last year in July, 2.2 million British people visited us.

This year 377,886 have done so, 82.5% less.

As for the Germans (vital demand for islands like the Balearic Islands), 432,302 arrived, 65.2% less).
