Alongside them, four other officers are particularly targeted by the investigation for corruption launched within the Ministry of Defense and at the request of Crown Prince
Mohammad ben Salman
.
It is therefore a new blow in the fight against this endemic scourge against which the regime claims to be fighting for years.
Last March, nearly 300 senior government officials were arrested on the same charges.
In 2017,
hundreds of princes, ministers and businessmen were detained
for corruption in the luxury Ritz-Carlton hotel in Riyadh.
A detention which lasted for some several weeks, and ended with financial agreements with the government.
Critics of the regime accuse the crown prince of using the fight against corruption as an excuse to rule out potential rivals to his succession to the throne and consolidate his control over the country's security and the crackdown on dissenting voices.
The NGO
Human Rights Watch
last March denounced unfair prosecutions in an opaque judicial system.
