Consumer motivation for shopping etc. declined in August Downward revision of basic judgment Cabinet Office August 31, 16:15

The "Consumer Attitude Index" in August, which shows consumers' willingness to shop, fell below the previous month, dropping for the first time in four months. The Cabinet Office revised the keynote judgment downward, saying that "the tempo of picking up is slowing down."

Every month, the Cabinet Office quantifies 8,400 households nationwide as a “consumer attitude index” by asking them about their lifestyle and willingness to shop for the next half year.

As a result, the index for households with more than two people in August was 29.3, down 0.2 points from the previous month, the lowest decline in 4 months.

This is the fourth lowest level since April 2013, with comparable statistics.

By item, the
▽ "employment environment" index was 0.5 points lower than the previous month,
▽ "lifestyle" was 0.3 points, and
▽ "income increase" was 0.1 point.

For this reason, the Cabinet Office revised the keynote judgment, which was "although it is still tough, but it is still picking up," downward for the first time in four months, saying that "the tempo of picking up is slowing down."

The Cabinet Office said, "The increase in the number of people infected with the new coronavirus seems to have affected the psychology of consumers, and the pick-up movement is somewhat slowing down."
