Dubai Economy confirmed that it encourages the owners of trademarks, intellectual property rights and commercial agencies registered in the country to register their files on the intellectual property portal in the Dubai Economy, so that the department can protect their rights, as intellectual property is one of the main bases for building a knowledge economy that encourages innovation.

The Commercial Control and Consumer Protection Sector in Dubai Economy revealed that the total number of active trademark files at the end of the first half of 2020 reached 5126 files, an increase of 14% compared to the end of the same period in 2019.

The sector stated, in a statement yesterday, that it had received 132 complaints of infringement of trademark intellectual property rights during the first half of this year, a decrease of 29% compared to the same period in 2019.

According to the statement, the total number of effective commercial agency files reached 57, an increase of 119% compared to the end of the first quarter of 2019, while the number of complaints of infringement of commercial agencies decreased by up to 44%, after only nine complaints were registered.

Nationality of the signs

According to the statement, American trademarks still constitute the largest percentage of files registered in the intellectual property portal since its inception, with 1543 files registered, followed by Emirati trademarks with 785 files, then German marks with 339 files, then French trademarks, which registered 322 files, and British trademarks 290 files.

In addition, the Swiss trademarks topped the increase in the rate of registrations of new trademarks in the intellectual property portal in the Dubai economy by 44%, compared to the same period last year, followed by the British Virgin Islands trademarks by an increase of 30%, then the French trademarks by 25%, UAE marks 18%, then German marks 16%.

Infringement complaints

The largest share of complaints of intellectual property rights infringement was for Swiss marks, which accounted for 23% of the first quarter complaints, followed by American marks, which scored 20%, and then equal for German, French and Emirati marks, with 13% of the total complaints.

Complaints of infringement of intellectual property rights were distributed among different products, as clothes accounted for 17% of the complaints, followed by jewelry from non-metals 13%, watches 10%, sunglasses, bags, leather products, and cosmetics 8% equally.

Ibrahim Behzad, Director of the Intellectual Property Protection Department in the Commercial Control and Consumer Protection Sector in the Dubai Economy, said that the results achieved during the first half of this year indicate the important and vital role of Dubai’s economy represented by the commercial supervision and consumer protection sector in protecting the rights of investors, which is what It enhances the confidence of the business community, and enhances the economic environment in the emirate.

He added: “The results of the rise in commercial agency files indicate the emirate’s investment attractiveness, by attracting the best brands, and reflects the growing role of the retail sector in the emirate at the global level, and the continuous strengthening of its position, as well as enhancing competitiveness among the various trademark owners and commercial agencies.”
