Hotel, vacation rental, beach ... Pets are not allowed everywhere. - IStock / City Presse

At the time of the holidays, the question of the care of his animal arises. While some are lucky to have relatives who can take care of the dog during their absence, others prefer to call on occupational pensions. But what about holidaymakers who want to go on an adventure with their companion?

While it is of course allowed to circulate freely on French territory with its animals, certain places are sometimes prohibited for them.

On the abandoned beach ...

Do you dream of fine sand, large expanses and crystal clear water? Note that, in summer, unfortunately not all beaches allow pets. Indeed, only the mayor of the town in question is empowered to authorize or prohibit the presence of dogs on the seaside. To find out if you can take a dip with your pooch, you can examine the informative panels of your resort, inquire directly with the tourist office or the town hall, or consult the websites of the 30 Millions Amis and SPA foundation, which each year list the beaches that accept animals. In case you defy the ban, know that you risk a fine of 11 euros.

If you are allowed to walk on the sandbanks with your dog, you must respect the imposed schedules if there are any (often early in the morning and late at night), collect your pet's droppings and, above all, , keep it on a leash.
Also note that the beaches of Var and Pyrénées-Orientales are generally more welcoming, while those of Bouches-du-Rhône and Hérault are less so. On the other hand, in Finistère, dogs are prohibited from the beach all year round, as in the south of the tip of Brittany.

Seasonal rentals

Are you planning to rent a small house? Here too, you might face obstacles. Since 2012, the legislation has given a landlord the possibility of refusing the presence of an animal in the context of a “seasonal rental of furnished tourist accommodation”. In other words, you will have to ask the renter for permission to stay with your furball before making any reservation.

If the owner of the premises accepts your dog or cat, you must ensure that it does not cause any damage or disturbance of enjoyment. In fact, unwanted and repetitive barking and meowing can be a cause of night and day noise. These noise nuisances can cost you a fine of 68 euros. And in the event of material damage, you may never see your deposit again and need your liability insurance. Even if your faithful companion is wise, remember to clean the hair and avoid disturbing odors anyway.

At the restaurant and at the hotel

On the other hand, with regard to the presence of animals in restaurants, the law is completely silent. Indeed, dogs are not allowed in food stores for hygienic reasons, but nothing is specified for restaurants. It is therefore at the discretion of the restaurateur.

In general, tolerance is more appropriate when lunch is served on the terrace. But inside the restaurant, it is better to ask the manager for permission. Dogs must, of course, be kept on a leash, not bark and not interfere with the service. In hotels, pets are generally not allowed. This clarification is, in principle, indicated on the booking platforms or on the establishment's website. If accepted, the hotel may charge an additional fee.
